Hernie has been a certified Visual Arts Teacher for 20-years. Her journey into counselling stems from her formative years in education and her travel around the world.
The international lifestyle removed her from that ‘grounding' of home and community. Early in her life abroad, she recognized the importance of ‘self-care’. It helped her to process and reduce the stress of new places and new countries. It is through these challenges and growth, while abroad, that Hernie desires to help others become more aware of their own emotional state, stress and anxiety. This passion led her to pursue a Masters in Counselling. Hernie has worked with both individuals and group counselling sessions in most aspects of treatment therapy. She has experience with children and youth from the local and international schools and completed “Children-at-Risk” integrated workshop.
Hernie is highly creative and works with a wide array of art forms. She is also a certified mindfulness teacher and uses the techniques of coping breathing space and body scan, amongst others, to help her clients manage anxiety, stress and depression. Hernie also uses her visual arts background and studies in art therapy to help support her counselling methodologies. She has also held multiple exhibitions of her work at home in Singapore, in Australia and Italy. She was an ambassador to Singapore at the “ASEAN Cultural Exchange Program.”
The peak of 20-plus years in art education has helped Hernie to adapt her skills in art and with children in all spectra of the education curriculum and counselling continuum. It is this varied experience coupled with her passion for counselling that brings Hernie to connect with the Holistic Psychotherapy Centre.
